I enjoy every aspect of the game from blocking dirtballs to hitting that 400 ft. homerun. Baseball has been in my life for I can almost say my whole life and I hope to continue to play throughout my life. However baseball can teach you more than just catching and throwing. It teaches you about life. Teaches you how to be responsible, how to work together as a whole and not an individual, how to manage your life, your time. Baseball can take me many places.

Head coach Scott Yamada of Moanalua High School states that he uses baseball to teach the players mainly about teamwork, hard work, sacrifice and responsibility. He tells us that baseball teaches you about team work because you need to work in a group to get the job done which in this situation is to win the game. He stated that “one person can’t win a state championship but with 24 guys working hard for one goal there may be better results as to playing as an individual.” In baseball you can’t work as an individual you have to work as a team. He states that baseball teaches you hard work because constant hard work and repetition will give you better and a somewhat quicker result.

Yamada states that “the game teaches you about being responsible because in this program you have to balance your life like how it would work in real life.” In baseball, we have to manage three important things and that is our families, school and of course baseball. “The management skills come in because if as a player you don’t balance these three things then something will suffer” Yamada states. “If you focus only on baseball then your school work suffers the consequences.” So that’s why with baseball as an extracurricular activity at school, it can help teach you on how to manage your time which can then relate to on managing your time in a real life situation.

Lastly baseball teaches you how to sacrifice things. Sacrifice meaning you have to give up something you may want really badly but in the end it’s the right thing to do and you made more people happy other then yourself. In baseball and in life you have to be unselfish and put other before yourself in some situations. In baseball you have to sacrifice your ego. Meaning that “you can’t be the ‘I’ guy because you as an individual won’t win the game.” An example would be laying a bunt down to move the runner at first over to second to put him in scoring position for the winning run, and then if the run scores your team will be recognized as a whole because you won the game. “You may not be recognized as an individual, but your team will as a whole.” In life you have to sacrifice things to be successful, in base ball you need to sacrifice to be successful. You need to choose between yourself and or winning the state championship.

According to assistant coach Merl Miyashiro, “the words ‘Moanalua Baseball’ stands for hard work and hustling.” That’s what the coaches teach the players at Moanalua, not only to play the game but to do the little extra things as well.

Baseball is also like a big system that can help you go in any direction in your life. Baseball can take you to college, find jobs and much more. If a business boss just so happen came to a baseball game and he say that you were working hard and that you did everything you did to help your teammates. Then you decided you wanted to apply for a job and just so happen this boss that watched you work hard already knows that you’re a hard worker and that’s what he likes, hard workers. You got the job.

So for those reasons are why baseball is a passion that I enjoy but it can also help me in other areas in my life. How it teaches me different things other than catching and throwing. How it can help me get places in my life. My passions baseball, what’s yours?

Journal 2

My research was basically all with my coach on how much more baseball can teach you as a passion. I also interviewed my dad but he never helped me out as much haha.
The basic overall question I asked my coach was what more can baseball teaches you other than just playin the game? This was a basic overall response

He said it teaches you TEAMWORK, HARDWORK and RESPONSIBILITY.
Baseball teaches you teamwork because you need to work in a group to get this job done which is winning the game. With one person you cannot win a state championship he says that 24 guys have to work hard for one goal and that is to win the state championship. You have to manage your life with school, your family and baseball. The management skills come in because if you don’t balance these three things then something will suffer. If you focus only on baseball then your school might suffer. And if you only focus on school then you might not be playing as much in baseball.

Baseball also teaches you sacrifice. You have to sacrifice your ego for the team. You can’t be the ‘I’ guy because you as an individual won’t win the game. But if you sacrifice your self as an individual to maybe lay the bunt down to move the guy over to scoring position for the winning run, then if that run scores, your team will be recognized as a whole. In life you have to sacrifice, to be successful in baseball you have to sacrifice. You need to chose between yourself or a state championship.

Journal 32

My memorable learning experience is when i first lesarned to use all of the video editing and graphic design programs. I just understood how to use these pragrams right off the back and I was having fun with it too which is why I think it is most memorable.

My vision for an ideal school would be a school in which best fits the student and what career they want to persue. But everyone should learn at least 3-4 years of basic math, english, history and science. Then say someone wants to become a doctor. Then the student would go to a school in wich the student only needs to learn what needs to be learned to become a doctor. Not anything else that they won't need in the future because i feel it's a waste of time. How ever if this student decides that they want to change their career path then the alternative would probably be to start school all over again for that different career path.

Journal 31

My passion is sports. That word is “Perfect”. Does it mean to win everything? Does it mean not having any faults? What does the word perfect mean? Coaches use the word, the news paper use the word. Everyone uses the word. But do these people really know what it means? But can any person or any team really be “Perfect?”

A coach once talked to me about having the “perfect season” where you win every game. To beat every team you play, to win the state championship in the end. If you think about it there is really no “perfect season”. Yeah you can win every game; you can go 162-0. You can go 200-0. But how does that make it perfect? How does winning all your games make you the perfect team? “Well obviously they won every game so how does that make them not perfect?” Yeah they won but how did they win? Was every game played, played to perfection? Was every pass thrown or every pitch thrown perfect? Did the team play the entire game, the entire season played without fault?

“This is the year” my coach told me. He told me that if I wanted to be a state champion this is the team and this is the year we can do it. He asked me as well as the rest of the team if we could be perfect. So this got me to think…”What is a perfect person?” “Can anyone ever be perfect?” Then the other day my father and I had a talk about how some guys on the team have big egos and how they think that they’re good enough. But then he told me that in baseball you’re never good enough. You can never be a perfect baseball player. There is always room for improvement. You can always get better.

I also hear the saying to “stride for perfection”. How can someone “stride for perfection?”What does that really mean? Personally I think it means to do the best you got. You can’t stride for something that’s not there. Perfection is a term used for people to get motivated to work hard. But in reality there is no perfect person. There isn’t that perfect team or perfect person that will do everything the right way or do everything without screwing up once or twice. So I think the saying should be altered to “stride for greatness.”

The 2009 -2010 for a high school football team from Hawaii had its best season in school history going undefeated throughout regular season and later winning the OIA White division championship. Everyone was so happy calling it the “perfect season”. But was it really perfect? Was every win and every play perfect? Not to take anything away from the team they did a great job but how can they call it perfect when they had many faults? How many overtime wins and how many missed opportunities did the team have to take the lead over several teams they played? So what made this season so special that everyone was to brag about this school having a perfect season?

Look at all these professional athletes. Mark Maguire, Alex Rodriguez, Michael Vick, These are all great athletes at the sports they play but they all had faults in their lives. Maguire and Rodriguez two of the greatest baseball players of all time both found guilty of using steroids. Michal Vick one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL sent to imprisonment and suspension for dog fighting. This shows that even some of the greatest athletes in the world aren’t perfect. Everyone has faults even professionals.

You can look at it either way, perfect on paper or perfect in action but in reality there is no such thing as being perfect. No matter who you are what team you play for, you can never be perfect. There is always room for improvement in anything you do. You will go out through your life hearing these things about being perfect. But you always have to ask yourself for your own perspective. What is being “perfect?”
<img width='1' height='1' in Hawaii like to play with fireworks on New Year’s Eve. Fireworks are dangerous and cause many fire hazards but think about it, Hawaii is the only state in the entire country that is allowed to play with these things on this day. This is what makes Hawaii unique in its own way. If people choose to illegalize fireworks in the state of Hawaii, the people of Hawaii won’t have that one unique day that makes us different from the rest of the united states.

Reply to Inital Comment on Portfolio

My portfolio had all the components that show good writing. I really enjoyed reading through and discussion with Austin his portfolio. I am especially impressed with how computer savy Austin has become.

2. I believe that Austin's attainment of the "voice" trait is most valuable in his writings. I can easily see that he is passionate about what he is writing about and can feel what he is feeling. Many of his writings, especially his Coming of Age piece, brought tears to my eyes as I can connect to what he was feeling as he describes situations from his days as a young boy. Then again, I am his mom so the pride pours out of me when he recalls these memorable times! =)

3. I would like Austin to focus more on his Conclusion and Presentation. I feel that if he is more conscientious and takes more time proof reading before completing a project, it would make his work that much better.

Draft AL

Dear Governor Linda Lingle
I am a 10th grader at Moanalua High School and I love living in Hawaii. I have been living in Hawaii my whole life (15 years) without problems with the way things were being going with the government. It’s been right on track my whole life.

However, this past year had created some issue for me as a student in Hawaii. This problem is your decision on the furlough Friday. With Hawaii under a standards based grading scale, teachers say to be “require” to teach all of this information by a certain date. Without these Fridays in the school week, I don’t really have enough time to be learning the information into better understanding then I could normally do. I understand that the state doesn’t have enough money to pay the teachers for their services but I feel that the younger generations especially kids in high school need to get a good education to prepare for college or maybe even the “real world”. Keeping these furloughs on Fridays won’t help that one bit.

Although, I do have fun because of no school on Fridays, I still have to say that I am having a little harder time getting the grades I usually have because of these shorter weeks and less time learning in class. I also appreciate your sympathy for the teachers since they can’t get paid why not have days off. But kids are the future and Hawaii should prepare its keiki for a better life.

I hope these furloughs get ended so I can personally prepare myself for college and have a better life.

Sincerely,
Austin Inabata

Angry Letter

For my angry letter i am thinking about writing to linda lingle about the furloghs. or may be to president obama about sending more soldiers to the war.

Risky Business Draft

Steroids should be illegal to everyone except for Rx purposes. This is to prevent all of the bad effects that steroids bring to people. Effects such as violent mood swings, stunted growth, kidney stones and just basically give you problems you just don’t want to have. By eliminating steroids you are eliminating these problems and preventing teens to start taking them.

People might say that even if steroids are prohibited, people who want them will still spend the money to buy them and if people keep buying the dealers will keep selling. Although this might be true, making steroids illegal will stop companies from making these steroids and everything will shut down. There will be no dealing and no taking of steroids. Teens won’t be able to get them anywhere and that will solve part of the problem.

Some people also might say that taking steroids is a personal choice for them self and they don’t want anyone telling them what they can and cannot take. I feel that these people are completely blind and stupid. The only reason why we bring out the message of the effects and problems that come with steroids is so that these problems can be prevented and fewer deaths due to an overdose of steroids are cut down.

It is found that 5% of teen males and 2% of teen girls in America is found to take illegal anabolic steroids. Making steroids illegal will prevent even that little 7% of teens taking steroids and there wouldn’t be a problem of deaths or health problems from steroids. Steroids bring added pressure for sporty teens to make themselves have an advantage to play in college or the next level. Eliminating steroids from everything by illegalizing it will prevent all this pressure and problems that teens face with today

Journal 15

Thesis Statement: Steroids should be illegal unless for Rx purposes.

1 Pro: This will prevent young teens from taking them and them suffering the concequences in the long run.

2 Con: Just like other drugs, steroids still may be obtained and used illegaly by teens and adults.

Coming of Age Essay DRAFT

University of the Pacific
(brief personal statement)

Hajumemashite, Watashi wa Inabata Austin desu. Doozo yoroshiku. How do you do, my name is Austin Inabata, nice to meet you. I am a local, full Japanese, Hawaii boy. Born and raised on the beautiful island of Oahu.

I’m very active playing sports year round!! If it’s not one it’s the other busy busy busy! My life has always been in the baseball world but I still enjoy playing football. I try to keep my grades top shape just like how I try and keep my body. Physically fit. I always try to be the best at whatever I do. If I’m not in first, to me that’s a failure. I always want to try and be number 1. I know this may seem like I have a big ego or that I’m conceded but I try to stay humble about it. Especially when I win something unless the other people are acting up and being cocky during the event then they will get an earful from me.

I can get along with anyone! Except for the following…Know it all’s, again cocky people, people that hate on others and the biggest one is PUNKS!! Well ok then maybe not anyone…
I guess you can call me a jock but I also have a soft side…Between you and me, I love little children!! They are sometimes better then the friends I have at my school now!! But I like to take care of babies and watch little children run around the park. I also like dancing even though I’m not very good but I still like it thanks to one of my friends at school. So this is my secret life. The life behind the jock you could say. So yeah...This is me, another “High School Musical Troy Bolton” but a dancing one not singing. Till then… Sayoonara!!

Journal 9

Perks of Being a Wallflower
This book shows coming of age because it shows how Charlie grew throughout his high school life. What i thought helped me through my life to grow as a person. I had no plan on what i wanted to do when i started. I just found a family picture and set it as my background and went from there. I guess the television and picture frames came in because when i looked at a few other postes my classmates made, the pictures were like in something so i thought id give it a try. HAHA

I used basically just the pictures that were in my "pictures" file. I just tryed to focus on the things that helped me grow as a person. Its finally game time and everyone’s stoked for the game. My coaches are ready to toss me the ball right down Main Street so I can rip the ball over every ones head and run around the short 60ft bases. But this isn’t all I wanted to do during these times. I look over to the next fields and see the big kids playing ball. Running faster, hitting harder and throwing farther than anyone I’ve ever seen before. All I really wanted was to play on that 90ft diamond where players throw to players not coaches. My dream was to play with the “Big Kids.”
I remember my first time ever playing coach pitch and we were warming up I saw a couple of older guys playing catch and throwing the ball real far. But of course I know I can’t throw that far but I said to myself what the hay why not give it a shot. I told my teammate Skyler, the boy was throwing with to “move back” until we were about 100ft apart (that’s kind of far for kids to throw in the fourth grade). Then I took aim and focused real hard on my target, gathering all my strength to throw the ball al the way to him on the fly. Then I threw the ball as hard as I could into the air watching the ball sail high. But all dreams were lost when I saw the ball going down and down till it fell short of him about 30ft. I knew I was in over my head but I was determined to reach him on the fly one of these days.
Two years later I’m in mustang, the first league where players throw to players and we were on a trip to New York because we had entered a tournament there. The team and I were all at the house where the parents were staying and watching the 2005 replay of the homerun derby and watching balls fly out of the park like mini rockets. I told myself as well as the rest of the team that I was going to take one out of the park one of these games and everyone was ragging me telling me “yeah ok” or “come on really?” but that didn’t faze me. So in the third game of the tournament, I watch my friend Jarin get walked so he’s on first so now I’m up. Ready to show the guys how it’s done. So the first pitch comes a fast ball coming….”ball!” yells the umpire coming a little too high. I take my signals from the coach at third and back into the batter’s box. The next pitch was a strike curveball down the middle so the count stands 1-1. I reset my mind looking for that one pitch fastball to take it out of the yard. The pitch comes and it’s the one. The ball was coming as if time were slowing down so I can hit the ball out. I load my hands and swing the bat…”PING” the ball flies high and to right field I’m running toward first watching the ball go high but it lands just short of the wall and the right fielder was there for the first out. I went back to the dugout with discuss and I was willing to do anything to get another chance of taking one out.
Now I’m in high school playing third base for the Moanalua Menehune and it’s the first game of regular season. The thought of me almost hitting a homerun and not throwing the ball on the fly still lingering in my mind. Of course over the set of 5 years I got bigger and stronger but I need to put it to the test. In the first inning of the game I’m at third and it’s about 110 foot throw from third. I was playing a little deeper the usual because it was a big batter and then there was a hard shot right to me. I took a step back and slid on my right shin to field the ground ball. I don’t have much time left so I just grabbed the ball out of my glove, stood up and just threw the ball to Nolan the first basemen with all my strength the ball was thrown right on the money...”Out” yelled the umpire. Three outs and the inning was over. All my work I put in over the past 5 years finally paying off with a nice play to start the season.
During the same game, by the 5th inning we were already winning 20-1 and I was up with bases loaded. In this situation all you want to do his hit the ball nice and solid. So I’m in the box ready to rock and roll and the first pitch comes like a lob right over the plate and “ping!” I hit the ball solid right on barrel and the ball is flying over to right field. I see the right fielder on the other team running back and back till he stops at the fence...the umpire gives the signal that it’s a HOMERUN!! My first grand slam of my career. I was happy and excited for this because I finally did it. I finally hit a homerun.
All the things I set my mind to doing coming true in a matter of 2 hours on the same day. I mentioned to all my friends that were with me on the trip about my homerun and they were all happy for me. Now that I was older and more experienced and I knew what I could do. I could now throw the ball further and hit the ball farther then I ever imagined doing. I went from the little kid wishing I could throw the ball far and hitting a homerun to actually doing it. Through this baseball experience it has taught me that I could accomplish anything as long as I was willing to try and work at it not only in baseball but in my life as well. So remember, as the old saying goes, “anything is possible if you put your mind to it” ;)

Coming of Age

Saturday mornings bright and early 8 years ago when I was in the 4th grade, waking up at 6:30 in the morning so I could be at the field at 7:00 ready to warm up for my game.

I told myself as well as the rest of the team that I was going to take one out of the park one of these games and everyone was ragging me telling me “yeah ok” or come on really?” but that didn’t faze me. So maybe the third game during the tournament I still didn’t hit my homerun and we were beating the other team up id say like 13-2 and we were in the fourth inning. I watch my friend Jarin get walked so he’s on first so now I’m up. I load my hands and swing the bat…”PING” the ball flies high and to right field I’m running toward first watching the ball fly like a bird hoping it will carry over the wall but it lands just short of the wall and the right fielder was there for the first out.

I was playing a little deeper the usual because it was a big batter and then there was a hard shot to me on my right side. I took a step back and ran a little to the right slid on my right shin to field the ground ball. Now I’m about 120ft from the base, I don’t have much time left so I just grabbed the ball out of my glove popped up to a standing position and just threw the ball to Nolan the first basemen with all my strength the ball was thrown right on the money. The runner was almost there but the “Pack” the ball hit Nolan’s glove then….”Out” yelled the umpire.

My first out of the park grand slam of my career.

Writing Experiences

Over the past year i would have to say that my writing has improved greatly.
